Morioka Sakura Festival (盛岡さくらまつり)
When spring arrives in Morioka, the whole city comes alive with soft pink cherry blossoms. It's the perfect time to enjoy the outdoors, take in some beautiful views, and celebrate the changing season. One of the best ways to do that is by visiting the Morioka Sakura Festival (https://moriokasakurafestival.com), happening again in this year, 2025 at two of the city's most loved spots: Morioka Castle Ruins Park and Takamatsu Park. This festival has been a special tradition since the early Showa period and is loved by both locals and visitors. Every year, families, friends, and travelers gather to enjoy the beauty of the cherry blossoms--known as sakura in Japanese. During the festival, the trees are beautifully lit up at night with lanterns and soft lights, creating a peaceful and magical atmosphere from morning till night.
One of the most famous sights during the festival is the Ishiwarizakura, or "rock-splitting cherry tree." It's an approximately 400-year-old tree that has grown straight out of a big granite rock in front of the Morioka District Court. It's been standing strong for centuries and is now a national natural monument. Seeing this tree is not only beautiful--it's also inspiring, as it's seen as a symbol of strength and hope.
At the heart of the festival is Morioka Castle Ruins Park. Although the castle itself is long gone, the stone walls and open spaces are perfect for a springtime stroll. When the cherry blossoms bloom in mid-April, the park becomes a stunning mix of pink flowers, green pine trees, and blue skies. You can enjoy the view from above or below the walls, and on a clear day, you can even see Mount Nanshozan (南昌山) in the distance.
In the evening, the park transforms into a magical scene. Lanterns light up the cherry trees, especially around the inner citadel area of Morioka Castle. The soft glow of the lights against the night sky makes it feel like you're walking through a dream. It's the perfect place for a peaceful walk or a romantic evening out.
Another amazing spot is Takamatsu Park, located in the northern part of Morioka. This park is known for its beautiful nature and relaxing atmosphere. In spring, about 1,200 cherry trees bloom around Takamatsu Pond, making it one of the best places in all of Japan to see sakura. During the day, you can enjoy a peaceful walk, take pictures with Mount Iwate in the background, or have a picnic by the pond.
At night, the scene changes once again. Lights are placed around the pond, and their reflections on the water create a calm, dreamlike mood. It's a completely different experience from the daytime--and just as beautiful.
The Morioka Sakura Festival is a perfect way to enjoy spring in Japan. Whether you want to admire the famous Ishiwarizakura, take in the historic views at the castle ruins, or relax by the pond at Takamatsu Park, this festival offers something special for everyone. You can enjoy the blossoms in the sunshine or under the lights--both are unforgettable in their own way.
